On 27 March 1945 Capt. Basil Marriott describes in a report the operation that salvaged from their storage rooms below the demolished campanile of the church of San Francesco archaeological treasures from Museo Nazionale and ecclesiastical ones fron the Cathedral; Lt. Col. Ward-Perkins was fortuitously on site armed with a camera and could take photographs.
